Ruthless marauders leave Mitch Henley and his band of survivors homeless.

When the remote Henley homestead is burned to the ground in a brutal attack, Mitch and his friends bury their dead and move to a deep woods hideaway where survival becomes a struggle against raw nature.

But they are soon faced with another crisis that requires something that can only be found in the ruins of the towns and cities. Taking a single companion, Mitch embarks on a perilous quest into dangers unknown.

The others wait and wonder if he will return, while in his absence an unexpected visitor tracks them to their wilderness refuge.

The Savage Darkness is the fourth book set in the desperate, grid down world of the Darkness After Series, the story of a group of teens and young adults fighting to survive in a world gone dark.

The Savage Darkness Darkness After Series Book 4 edition by Scott B Williams Children eBooks

As the cover indicates, this is number four of a series and reports the adventures of a group of mostly high school-aged people coping with the aftermath of a solar event that knocked out the power grid in the US. It runs more or less parallel to the Pulse series (also with four installments to date), but the two story lines are completely separate (the Pulse crowd has decamped to the Bahamas at this point so it's not likely they will ever interact directly).

The main characters are Mitch and Lisa Henley, living near their family's land after the events of the third book, which as the blurb notes saw their house burned down. Although they are living in more primitive conditions, most of the focus of this installment is not on the primitive living itself, but rather the effort to acquire things they need but don't have in the aftermath of the fire. The quest leads to substantial peril for some of them.

The writing is pretty good, and the story reads similar to other books by this author: The story covers events happening in different places and at different times, switching between them frequently. It can be a little challenging to match everything up timewise, but enough markers are provided to enable that. The story holds together and illustrates at different points, examples of amazing naivete and lack of caution--and the consequences. Also similar to other books in this series, the ending is a cliffhanger pointing to a fifth installment (the cliffhanger aspect seems to be more direct with the Darkness series than with those in the Pulse collection, possibly because of the young adult (YA) target market for these). In this case, enough material is let on the table for at least another couple of books, delving into a sub-plot I have been half-expecting for some time.

I hope a number five is coming. These books are somewhat brief, but that allows frequent releases. Although nominally YA, they're plenty readable by non-Y people. I'm not necessarily sold on the post-apocalyptic genre overall, but the characters are engaging and interesting. I have read a few doomer-style books and these are the best of them.

Another GREAT WORK by my favorite author ; I love both of the series DARKNESS and PULSE ; keep 'em coming !!
A few hours more of the tale of Mitch the archer and Lisa and April et al. I guess the next episode will be the story of mitch's parents, and I'll be waiting...
Scott B. Williams, has done it again another great read in this series. Just loved it.
Wish he could put another book out in 3 months or less.
Can hardly wait for the next one.
Awesome kindle read!! The fourth book in the series and just as good or better than the previous three! It is such a great read, hard to put down, finished the same week purchased! Can't wait for future books in the series! Scott is my favorite author, with a local area interest fir writing!
another good tale by scott. as usual, i had planned to read this book over a few days during a hospital stay. didn't happen...i read it straight through. scott does more than just tell a tale, he teaches you along the way. his considerable experience with survival, camping, boating and similar activities enables him to bring unique information to each of his tales. another book that is certainly worth reading.
