The stag of Texas, reclining in midnight lair, is startled from his slumbers by the hoofstroke of a horse. He does not forsake his covert, nor yet rise to his feet. His domain is shared by the wild steeds of the savannah, given to nocturnal straying. He only uprears his head; and, with antlers o’ertopping the tall grass, listens for a repetition of the sound. Again is the hoofstroke heard, but with altered intonation. There is a ring of metal—the clinking of steel against stone. The sound, significant to the ear of the stag, causes a quick change in his air and attitude. Springing clear of his couch, and bounding a score of yards across the prairie, he pauses to look back upon the disturber of his dreams. In the clear moonlight of a southern sky, he recognises the most ruthless of his enemies—man. One is approaching upon horseback. Yielding to instinctive dread, he is about to resume his flight when something in the appearance of the horseman—some unnatural seeming—holds him transfixed to the spot. With haunches in quivering contact with the sward, and frontlet faced to the rear, he continues to gaze—his large brown eyes straining upon the intruder in a mingled expression of fear and bewilderment. What has challenged the stag to such protracted scrutiny? The horse is perfect in all its parts—a splendid steed, saddled, bridled, and otherwise completely caparisoned. In it there appears nothing amiss—nothing to produce either wonder or alarm. But the man—the rider? Ah! About him there is something to cause both—something weird—something wanting! By heavens! it is the head! Even the unreasoning animal can perceive this; and, after gazing a moment with wildered eyes—wondering what abnormal monster thus mocks its cervine intelligence—terror-stricken it continues its retreat; nor again pauses, till it has plunged through the waters of the Leona, and placed the current of the stream between itself and the ghastly intruder. Heedless of the affrighted deer—either of its presence, or precipitate flight—the Headless Horseman rides on. He, too, is going in the direction of the river. Unlike the stag, he does not seem pressed for time; but advances in a slow, tranquil pace so silent as to seem ceremonious.

The Headless Horseman Mayne Reid 9781490974637 Books Reviews
Unfortunately, this is almost half-forgotten novel Mayne Reid. Meanwhile, this work is still interesting to read. First of all the novel can be attributed to the adventure genre. This is novel is about love to of Maurice to the daughter planter. But their love develops on the background of envy and hatred arising from Cassius Calhoun. His hatred to Maurice, we can consider as a starting point for the development of the plot. In the novel can be traced detective and mystical tone. In particular, deserve the admiration of the scene the appearance of the headless horseman. And his secret we learn in the end. I am sure that this novel has not lost its literary and modern values. The theme of love in the background of the drama that is always popular.
The best novel I have ever red ! Recommend )
I read this book when I was about 11, growing up in Israel. Westerns were our (the boys) choice entertainment and we could not wait for a new Hollywood western or search the libraries for books. The most populaer writer was Karl May, a prolific German writer of westerns not known to most Americans. And, also Mayne Reid. Both could rival Zane Gray. I have seen and read hundreds of westerns. In my opinion, The Headless Horseman is the most fascinating, romantic, and exciting western about Texas. You really feel the frontier atmosphere of years gone by which has been demonized by malticulturalists who have never had to fight for their freedom.
This was the very first book I fully read on my own. I was 11 or 12. It was recommended to me by an elderly and very charismatic gentleman who introduced me to the fun of reading. Rest assured that once I read this book, several times over from cover to cover, I was "bitten" and proceeded to read (and thoroughly enjoy) the ENTIRE collected works of this Irish author.
Over the years I have re read the collected works several times - in my 20s, 30s and am now looking to read them in my 40s, this time hopefully in the original English. This is to show that these books can be enjoyed at any age - for the beautiful writing, the adventure, the intrigue....
I also must say that as much as I love this book - I truly think it is wonderful - it isn't even my favorite Mayne Reid work! (I like Quadroon [more of a love story] and the Plant Hunters/Cliff Climbers [more exotic adventure] even more!) But getting back to the title at hand and before I digress too much, I will say that I recommend this book *wholeheartedly* to ALL the "romantics" out there, young and old!
All time favorite classic arrive to our home, in time and nice,. Thank You. My son love it and we are pleased to watch him reading with interest.
It is not for me to review the classical Mayne Reid - the magnificent story teller. It reminds me of my childhood when we avidly read Reid, Jules Verne, Fenimore Cooper etc.
